About the MRI

Why have I been sent here for an MRI?
Your physician referred you to us, asking us to handle the specialized procedure you need. Working directly with your physician, we strive to provide the best possible care.

What is an MRI?
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a procedure used to look at a specific part of your body that produces a series of images. Using a magnetic field and radiowaves, rather than x-rays, a computer generates a digital image. MRI scans do not use any X-rays or other types of ionizing radiation.

What should you expect on exam day?
No special preparations are required prior to your exam. You may eat and drink normally, although it is best to limit your caffeine intake.

What should you expect during the test?
You will be asked to lie down on the scanning table. You will be properly positioned by the MRI Technologist. The Technologist may place an MRI coil around the part of the body to be scanned. Like an antenna, the closer the coil is to the area of interest on your body, the better it receives the signal and the better the image quality of your exam. The Technologist will then move the table slowly into the system.

During the scan, you will hear a gentle tapping sound from inside the scanner that will vary in rhythm. This is normal and means that the scanner is acquiring your image. And, just like when taking a photograph, to get the best images, you should lie as still as possible while being scanned.

How long will it take for the test?
The time required for an MRI Scan is approximately 30 - 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body being scanned.

What happens after the test?
Immediately following the scan, you may resume your normal activities.

Who reads the test and how soon can I get the results?
Memphis Orthopaedic Group will send your MRI to Radsource for interpretation.  Radsource is a leading provider of innovative solutions for the outpatient imaging market.  The radiologists at Radsource are subspecialized in the interpretation of orthopaedic MRI.

An appointment will be scheduled for you to come into the office so that your doctor can discuss the results with you. The technologists will not be able to give you any information regarding your test.

MOG physicians also review the MRI studies and often discuss reults with Radsource Physicians.

How will payment be handled?
As a courtesy to patients, our staff acquires prior authorization with your insurance company to determine the cost to you. You will be notified about the insurance payment and your financial responsibility prior to the procedure. Depending on your coverage, you may be asked to pay a co-pay or percentage. This will be due on the day of your procedure.

After your procedure is complete, a claim will be filed with your insurance company for the charges.
